Rangers lead 1-0
In Game 1 of the 2023 World Series, the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 in 11 innings. In the best-of-seven series, the Rangers lead 1-0.
Early on, the Rangers took a 2-0 lead, but couldn't hold it. Texans entered the ninth inning trailing 5-3.
To force extra innings, shortstop Corey Seager hit a game-tying home run off Arizona closer Paul Sewald. Seager's home run tied the game at five and sent it to extra innings, giving Texas the opportunity to score again and potentially win the game.
A triple to center field by Arizona rookie Corbin Carroll tied the game in the third. The Diamondbacks then took the lead when Carroll beat a throw home off Ketel Marte's bat on a fielder's choice to first base.
Marte then added another RBI with a well-hit double later in the game. As a result, he extended his postseason hitting streak to 17 straight.
Seager's home run sparked a rally that continued into the eleventh inning, when Adolis García hit a walk-off home run to give Texas the victory.
This was the 14th time that a home run in the ninth or later turned a likely loss into a tie or victory in World Series history.
Overall, Adolis reached base five times. As a result, he surpassed the single-postseason record held by former Cardinal third baseman David Freese by getting his 21st and 22nd RBIs of these playoffs.
He also extended his home run streak to five games and his RBI streak to seven games.
64.4% of teams that win Game 1 win the series.
Game 2 is tomorrow at 8:07 and lefty Jordan Montgomery, for Texas, and righty Merrill Kelly are announced to start.
Adolis García played the role of hero once again for the Rangers on Friday night, crushing a walk-off solo homer in the home half of the 11th inning as the Rangers rallied to beat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in Game 1 of the World Series.
The Rangers tied the game in dramatic fashion as Corey Seager blasted a game-tying two-run shot off of Diamondbacks’ closer Paul Sewald in the ninth inning. The 30-year-old slugger then walloped an opposite-field 373-foot (106.4 mph EV) solo shot off of Miguel Castro to send the Rangers’ faithful into pandemonium. García also had an RBI single in the first inning, finishing the night 3-for-4 plus a walk, hit by pitch and a stolen base. He has homered in each of his last five ballgames and is hitting an unbelievable .357 (20-for-56) with eight homers, an MLB postseason record 22 RBI, 11 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases during this postseason.
A hit by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in his World Series debut.
Gurriel played in his first World Series game this Friday, going 1-for-5 with two strikeouts. In addition, the Cuban suffered defeat due to a home run hit by his compatriot Adolis Garcia. Throughout the postseason in 2023, Gurriel is hitting .245/.259/.415 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs, but he has struck out 13 times.
