National League Championship Series
D-backs 4, Phillies 2
D-backs won the series 4-3
In Game 7 of the Championship Series played at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2.
It is the second time in franchise history that Arizona Diamondbacks have won the National League championship.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are set to face the Texas Rangers in the World Series starting on Friday, after coming back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits in the best-of-seven series.
As Game 7 began, it was filled with action and tense moments but the Arizona bullpen kept the Phillies off the board for the final five innings and D-backs hitters were clutch.
A the end, it was the D-backs who got the big hit and execute the better pitches.
With tonight's win, Arizona won its second elimination game in a row.
The Game 7 victory was largely the result of key contributions. A rookie named Corbin Carroll had an outstanding game, going 3-for-4 with two steals that contributed to two of the four D-backs runs. Carroll singled to tie the score 2-2 in the fifth inning. Then he stole second and scored the winning run, thanks to Gabriel Moreno's right-field single.
Earlier in the game, Carroll had already scored the first run, courtesy of a single, another single by Moreno, and an infield ground ball.
As a rookie, Carroll joined Yoenis Céspedes (2012), Jacoby Ellsbury (2007), Chuck Knoblauch (twice in 1991), and Pepper Martin (1931) as the only players to steal two bases and have three hits in a postseason Game 7.
Credit must also be given to the D-backs pitching staff. Games 1-2 saw the Phillies score 15 runs, while Games 3-7 saw the D-backs hold Philadelphia to 15 runs. Turner went 0-for-12 in the last three games of the series. It took Castellanos two at-bats in the NLCS to hit a home run. He went 0-for-23 the rest of the way. From games 3-7, Bryce Harper went 2-for-16 with a home run, an RBI, and 5 strikeouts. Simple: you are not supposed to win a championship this way.
Diamondbacks' second baseman Ketel Marte was named the Most Valuable Player of the NLCS after Game 7. Marte has hit safely in all 16 postseason games he has played in - four in 2017 - including all 12 games this postseason and all seven games of the NLCS. In MLB history, that's the longest hitting streak to begin a postseason career. In the series, he hit .387 (12-for-31) with four doubles, a triple, three RBI, three runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Excluding the 2020 season and any strike seasons, the D-backs are the third team with the fewest wins (84) to win a pennant ever.
This Friday, they will play the Texas Rangers in the World Series. There will also be three Cubans representing their country.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had his third multi-hit game of the 2023 postseason.
Gurriel Jr. has hit at least two hits in three postseason games this year, including a solo home run in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. He has been a consistent hitter throughout the postseason, helping his team stay competitive in every game. In Game 7 of the NCLS, Gurriel went 2-for-4 with his second stolen base of the series. In his second MLB postseason, Gurriel is hitting .250/.265/.438 with 2 homers, 6 RBIs, and two stolen bases.
