Aledmys Díaz drove in a run while going 2-for-4 Monday against the Red Sox.
On his 32nd birthday, Díaz doubled in a run in the third off an otherwise effective Nathan Eovaldi to give Houston a 2-1 lead. It'd be the last run scored for Houston in a 3-2 loss to Boston Monday night. The Cuban utility player had another multi-hit game going 2-for-4. Díaz has heated up at bat recently slashing .327/.407/.635 with 4 HR, 7 walks, and 8 RBI during his last 15 games. Díaz has been so-so in his time with the Astros in 2022 as seen in a .255/.309/.426 slash over 216 at-bats.
Aroldis Chapman turned in a scoreless seventh inning in a four-run game against Mariners on Monday.
Since giving up three runs to the Orioles on July 22, Chapman has allowed just one batter to reach in his last four innings. He'll get more late-game work if he can keep it up.
White Sox's José Abreu, Yoán Moncada, and Yasmani Grandal: One hit combined Monday.
Abreu, Moncada, and Grandal went 1-for-11 on Monday's 2-1 loss to the Royals. Abreu and Grandal went 0-for-4 with a strikeout each, leaving a total of five runners stranded on base. Meanwhile, Moncada was 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. The young third baseman is trying to lift a terrible season that has him slashing .205/.268/.324 with 5 HR and 27 RBI.
Nat's Yadiel Hernández: One hit on Monday.
Hernández went 1-for-4 in a 7-3 loss to the Mets on Monday night. Hernández, batting fifth, scored his run #25 of the year while leaving his BA in .271. In his third MLB season the 34 y-old outfielder is slashing .271/.311/.412 with 7 HR and 36 RBI.
Rangers' Adolis García: Hitless on Monday.
García went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Monday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. García, with already 95 hits this season, is second among Cuban players in RBI this year with 63, but in his last 7 games is slashing a poor .185/.267/.296 with no homers, 4 RBI, and 10 SO.
Astros' Yulieski Gurriel, and Yordan Álvarez: Combined for one hit Monday night.
In a 3-2 loss to the Red Sox on Monday night, Gurriel and Yordan went 1-for-6 with an RBI. Gurriel was 1-for-4 adding his 31st double of the year - leading all Cuban players - with a run scored and a strikeout. The veteran first baseman is heating up but has found a replacement in the new Astros' acquisition of 1B/OF Trey Mancini. Meanwhile, Yordan was hitless but added his RBI #71 of the year - leading all Cuban players - with also a walk and a strikeout.
Orioles recalled OF Yusniel Díaz from Triple-A Norfolk.
He's taking Trey Mancini's spot on the roster, which isn't an enviable task. Díaz has just a .677 OPS at Norfolk this season and will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.
Luis Robert (head, illness) is not expected to be activated during the White Sox' series against the Royals.
Robert went on the injured list a week and a half ago with blurred vision and lightheadedness and recently had a setback due to a cold. He's feeling better but evidently not well enough for activation. Perhaps he'll be ready later this week.
Pirates acquired INF Malcom Núñez and RHP Johan Oviedo from the Cardinals for LHP José Quintana and RHP Chris Stratton.
Núñez, 21, has put up a .823 OPS with 17 home runs at the Double-A level this season. He was ranked by MLB.com as the Cards' No. 10 prospect.
Twins optioned RHP Yennier Canó to Triple-A St. Paul.
Canó has been sent back to the minors to make room for Gio Urshela to return from paternity leave. The 28-year-old rookie right-hander has made 10 relief appearances this season at the big-league level showing an horrific 9.22 ERA in 13.2 innings.
